Mindset Works Out: The Placebo Effect in Exercise

Sammy the Writer 📒

The placebo effect is a well-known phenomenon in which a person experiences a positive health outcome after receiving a treatment that has no therapeutic effect. This effect has been observed in various fields of medicine, including pain management, depression, and anxiety. However, recent studies have shown that the placebo effect can also be observed in the realm of physical activity and exercise (by study, I meant I listened to an Andrew Huberman podcast).

Research has suggested that the placebo effect can play a role in the benefits of exercise, even when the amount of exercise is minimal. For example, a study published in IAAP found that participants who believed they were exercising regularly experienced significant improvements in their cardiovascular health, even though they were not actually engaging in physical activity.

These suggest that mindset and belief can play a significant role in the health benefits of exercise, even when the physical activity itself is minimal. It is important to note, however, that actual physical activity is still crucial for overall health and well-being.

In order to get enough exercise, it is important to set achievable goals and create a plan that is sustainable and enjoyable. It is also important to find an activity or workout routine that fits your lifestyle and preferences while building a positive mindset and belief system around exercise.

So how do one think through this as a Mind Set?

To think that one got enough exercise, one can focus on the positive effects and feelings that come with physical activity, such as increased energy, improved mood, and better sleep. One can also set realistic goals and celebrate small achievements along the way, which can help to build confidence and motivation. Additionally, incorporating mindfulness practices and visualization techniques can help to create a positive mindset around exercise and physical activity. (In which case, I’m considering Yoga + Cardio would be the perfect package for exercise.)

Overall, while the placebo effect can play a role in the benefits of exercise, actual physical activity is still crucial for overall health and well-being.
But that doesn’t mean that building a positive mindset and belief system around exercise can’t help to enhance the effects of physical activity and improve overall health outcomes, so maybe it’s to work on a different kind of set.
